Book Review:Tata Log

This post is in continuation of my book review series (see here)

Tata Log is a book on the various aspects of the Tata Group. It covers various events in the Tata Group such as the launch of Tanishq, the path breaking SCIP program, the tribulations of Tata Finance, the making of Tata Indica etc

Written in a very easygoing and informal style, this makes for a good light read and I was able to finish it in one go.

The author of the book is Harish Bhat, the Managing Director of Tata Global Beverages Ltd.Mr. Bhat is widely regarded as an inspiring leader and a terrific person.Courteous to a fault and chivalrous to the extreme, I had the good fortune to listen to him at the book launch.

I would strongly recommend this book for those readers who want to know more about the Tata group.

Book Review:Where are the customer’s yachts?

This post is in continuation of my book review series (see here)

Where are the customer’s yachts?” is one of those books which come under the category of “Investment Classics”

It was written by Fred Schwed Jr in 1940 and is one of the funniest and yet most insightful books written on the stock market.

The title of the book comes from this beautiful story:

Once in the dear dead days beyond recall, an out-of-town visitor was being shown the wonders of the New York financial district. When the party arrived at the Battery, one of his guides indicated some handsome ships riding at anchor. He said,

“Look, those are the bankers’ and brokers’ yachts.”

“Where are the customers’ yachts?” asked the naive visitor.

Its funny how some things never change !!

Would strongly strongly recommend this book for anyone even remotely interested in the stock markets.

Book Review:Suits

This post is in continuation of my book review series (see here)

Suits is a book written by Nina Godiwalla.Nina is a Parsi born and brought up in the US.

The book narrates how Nina got a job on Wall Street and her experiences there.

Since Nina is a woman/an immigrant/from a small town, she had to undergo a series of cultural and other shocks to be able to “fit in”.Here’s one telling anecdote of how Wall Streeters perceive themselves:

Back to our clients,You do realize that they want to be us.They are infatuated with us, and we live out their dreams. That’s why they keep coming back.Don’t forget this is as good as it gets. That’s why you came here.Isn’t it?We’re not reporting in to some head of marketing or crap like that.Instead, we’re telling their CEOs and CFOs what to do.Don’t forget that you’re with the best of the best.

After reading this book, one wonders if any woman would like to work on Wall Street !

Would recommend this book to readers who want to get a feel of how Wall Street companies work !
